Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

Teeth grinding (also known as bruxism) is one of the most common conditions that we witness in the dental profession. The damage done from grinding your teeth is not seen over short periods of time but rather in the long term.

Some patients are unaware that they grind their teeth. Some symptoms to look for include:

  • Jaw pain, headache or earache
  • Frequent contraction of muscles on the side of the face
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Teeth that look flat at the tips
  • Abnormal alignment of teeth
  • Grinding noises, often very loud, during sleep

Teeth grinding is best treated as early as possible to avoid irreversible damage to the teeth. Treatment usually consists of making you a clear bite guard to wear at night (or during the day if that is when you grind most often) which is custom fit to your teeth. This will protect your teeth by transmitting the forces to the guard rather than to your teeth.

If you experience any of the above symptoms, we will be more than glad to address this at your first appointment. Until then, here is some more information about teeth grinding that you can print and read.
